Rode Greyboy bareback

So I rode yesterday for 40 minutes, bareback and just a halter. Just around the place. Good little ride, since I also gardened all day

March 6 plantings

Square foot gardening. Today I went and replanted Romain and Spinach. I planted them two weeks ago and did not see anything so I replanted in my square foot garden.

I also planted Beets in 8 square foot sections, 9 plants in each section. Then I planted butter lettuce in 7 sections 9 each. I also planted 8 asparagus plants that were two years old. We’ll see how those go. I hope they will be fine. My soil is a combination of composted horse manure 6″ deep and it is very light and easy to dig. It is not sandy as suggested in the asparagus planting instructions but it does drain well.

I then planted in containers that are on my back deck. I planted basil, oregano, Thyme, and Cilantro. A little early to plant and I am not starting them indoors, so I don’t have high expectations of success, but we will see what happens.

Benefit

The benefits of organic gardening are awesome and to numerous to list all here. So I will keep adding them as I see fit. I am growing organic crops. I started a few years back, well 10 years ago and then got into horses and replaced my garden. Now I have 80 acres and my horses and my new garden area. So I am starting brand new. I grew a good crop the last two years and plan on expanding.

I am growing in South Central Missouri in a rural community called Summersville. This year I grew tomatoes (of course) cucumbers, watermelon, cantelope, stevia, zucchnin, cilantro. Last year I grew green peppers and basil also.

Ogranic farming is not any more expensive then the big agribusiness chemical and GMO products to grow. But what it does offer is a way to contribute healthy and sustainable food for my family. Eventually for the community as well. We all need to start growing organically. It makes sense and it is much better for the earth and for our health. Organic foods have more nutrients in them then the chemically grown counterparts. Why? Because there is no disturbance in the microorganisms that are in the soil. When you use chemicals you kill these organisms that are essential for soil health and plant health. You can’t fool mother nature, you need to work with her.  If the public demands good healthy food we can change the world we can change agri-business. Even Del Monte is offering Organic products. I sent them a thank you note.

My success in gardening is only as a good as my knowledge about what the plants need to be the best they can be. My melon crops failed this year. I read a little about melons and found that I did not have the perfect soil for them, nor did I feed them enough. Although I have not had a chance to investigate in depth my problems; I will. My melons grew to almost harvest and then like a balloon they deflated. It was not pest, but soil conditions and maybe too much rain. It appeared they rotted from the inside. My tomatoes did great although as usual I crowed them too much. I will learn. Next year I am planning on many tomatoes, more basil, more melons, onions, cilantro, zucchini, green beans, garbanzo beans, and many other plants. I love to can my own salsa and relish. Thanks Iris for the great zucchini relish recipe, it is a hit with everyone.

Organic, you should purchase organic products and support the producers who give us this great gift. Let’s turn the world around and go back to a way of living that was clean, healthful and tasty.

More to come. Please join me in my search for a sustainable way of living. Organic is the way to go and buying locally. As my mother always said, buy American, and we didn’t listen. Look where that got us.

Seeds of Deception

Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies About the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You’re Eating

Jeffrey M. Smith gives a detailed description of the fraud that is going on with our food supply. This is after his gag order was removed. It took several years before he was allowed to get the word out. In America we never heard anything about it. You are being lied to by the FDA.

President Bush proposed an initiative to End Hunger in Africa using genetically modified (GM) foods. This was in 2003.  He blamed Europe’s unfounded, unscientific fears of these foods for hindering efforts. Thank God for Europe. It is all part of the master plan crafted by corporations determined to control the world’s food supply. These are excerpts from the book. I will be blogging on bits and pieces of the book. I want to convince everyone that we need to write our Government officials and let them know that we will not stand by and let our food be controlled by a select few.

Monsanto’s future plan is to have 100 percent of all commercial seeds genetically modified and patented. Monsanto wants us to surrender to this goal of theirs by flooding the market with their GM foods and in the end we will not have any choice.

You need to buy seeds and grow your own food. We all need to do our part to save seeds before it is too late. More tomorrow.
